From Turning Stone RV Park, Verona, NY
Tuesday
This morning we decided to just do a little driving around in the area. We first drove to the nearby town of Oneida, home of the Oneida Flatware Co. We didn't bother to find out if they had a Factory Store, since we had no need for additional flatware.
We then drove over to a neat little town of Clinton, described as a 'New England' style village. It was a very cute little town, with a town square park right downtown and neat stores.
We had lunch at a sidewalk cafe called Nola's. Great salads and sandwiches.
Donna did a little window shopping for real estate.
We then drove over to Utica, a large city nearby to visit the old hotel named Hotel Utica, built in 1912 and refurbished a few years ago.
A look at the lobby of the hotel.
We then did a little driving around downtown where we found this beautiful old building with a gold dome. Now home to M & T Bank, previously Saving Bank of Utica...
and this beautiful old theater.
Back at the coach we relaxed a while, then went to the casino for about an hour. I won about $100 and Donna 'broke even'.
Wednesday
With more sight-seeing in store for today we headed over to Rome, NY to visit Fort Stanwix, a fort originally established in 1757, about the time of the French Indian War. But first we made our first stop since leaving home at McDonald's to take advantage of their $1.00 menu.
As we entered the Visitor's Center a lady ranger was just beginning a tour, so we joined in.
Here Susan, our guide, is describing the inner entry door, with its small passage door.
The outer door, also of very thick wood is operated like a drawbridge...
Pulleys and weights counter-balance the door in order to raise it up..
with the weights running along a track to counter-balance the door.
After visiting the museum in the visitor's center and getting our Passport stamped, we drove over to Sylvan Lake and town and a large lake in the vicinity.
We visited the beach, and stole an idea from our friends, Mark and Dortha, and wrote greetings to the grandkids in the sand. First for Austin...
and then for Courtney and Conner.
Then to Eddie's, a local eatery since 1934 where we had a great lunch.
Back to the coach for a nap, then later back to the casino. Pretty much a break even trip for us both.
